Sustainable travel in Plymouth

by | Mar 27, 2023

Here at THINQTANQ we’re pretty passionate about the climate and we encourage our members to be as climate friendly as they can. We do know that travelling around a city is an interesting challenge. You don’t want to drive because of the costs and congestion. But you can’t walk everywhere because – well it’s a city and some of it is quite far away. But why does a co-working space care about how you’re travelling? Because we’re committed to reducing our impact on the planet, and includes helping YOU reduce yours too.

We are located right on Royal Parade where all the buses stop, we’re walking distance from everything central (and the seafront!), and we can help  if you need to go a bit further out. As a THINQTANQ family member you can make use of our members’ electric bikes FOR FREE! Check with the team if you want to book one out.

But, if you’re still not sure then let’s take a look at some ideas for making your commute as sustainable as possible. Plymouth has been making efforts to promote sustainable transport options in recent years. Here are some of the initiatives that have been implemented so far.

Travel initiatives

  1. Plymouth has been developing a network of cycle lanes and special routes around the city to make travel by bike safer. It’s not perfect by any means but there’s a great map which shows you how to get long distances without ever having to use main roads!
  2. There’s a brand new scheme from the city council bringing more options to every street with electric charging points for your EV popping up all over the city.
  3. As part of that same scheme you might have seen the new Beryl bike stands? These electric bikes can be hired for short bursts (but watch out for the costs and penalties if you leave them in the wrong place)
  4. Get on your feet! Plymouth has been promoting walking as a sustainable transport option, with a network of walking routes and improved pedestrian infrastructure in the city centre you can get pretty far without trying too hard and there’s some amazing scenery for your walks!
  5. Lift Sharing! Plymouth is part of the Car Share Devon network which matches people for journeys. Give it a try to reduce congestion, energy consumption, and maybe make a new friend.
  6. Hop on the bus! We’ve got a pretty good public transport network here in Plymouth. Most buses run through Royal Parade in the city centre and you can easily go as far as Paignton or Newquay!

If you’re still not sure then you can always give the Plymouth City Council Sustainable transport team a shout and see what else they’ve got up their sleeves!
